Connected Identities - Why Zero Trust in IoT/OT Starts with a "Secure" Identity.

Abstract

In today’s Industry 4.0 landscape, the lines between IT and OT (Operational Technology) are becoming increasingly blurred, and the traditional security model (perimeter security) is becoming obsolete in a world of connected machines and sensors. This is where Zero Trust comes in: No entity on the network is trusted by default; instead, every communication must be explicitly verified each time.

But what is this trust based on? This presentation demonstrates why a unique and cryptographically verifiable identity is the indispensable foundation of any Zero Trust architecture. While X.509 certificates are considered the gold standard for identity verification, the reality in the IoT environment presents companies with enormous hurdles: closed systems, limited hardware resources, and the challenge of automated deployment on an industrial scale.
